Just received a message today from the editor of the Attack of the 50FT Book anthology. Library of the Living Dead scuttled the antho, but the editor thought we'd saved it under a deal with Pill Hill Press. Unfortunately, that deal has fallen through and my story "Gus and Mariel" must now move from the "coming soon" to "stories looking for a home" section.
It's a shame. I really liked that story, a cute little tale about a building-size puffin who unwittingly goes on a nationwide rampage while trying to reunite with a lost love.
I'll try to find another place to submit this one, but since it was custom-tailored to a themed anthology about large creatures on rampages, that may prove difficult.

Updates for the Week of November 7
I have received confirmation that the short story anthology Attack of the 50FT Book has received an official reprieve. After being cancelled by Library of the Living Dead Press due to budgetary problems, the good folks at Pill Hill Press (the same place that published my short story "And the World Stopped") have decided to take on the anthology. A few of the authors dropped out, but the majority will stay the course and see their short stories published. Bravo!
Another anthology, Beta City, remains in flux, My story is short-listed on that one and stands a good chance of making it in. The antho, however, was a casualty of the purge at Library of the Living Dead. I know the editor is shopping the anthology around and hoping someone will publish it. Let's hope we find someone...and that my short story makes the final cut.
Crimsonstreak 2: Crimsonstreakier* is coming right along. The first draft is at 73,000 words. I expect this one to be a little longer than the first book. Heck, the first draft already dwarfs the original Crimsonstreak, which clocked in at a meaty 50,000 words. Crimsonstreakier may end up in the 100,000 word range when all the extra stuff is complete.
I just finished A Clash of Kings, Book 2 in the Song of Ice and Fire series. I now have to tackle A Storm of Swords, which is a couple hundred pages longer. I have until November 24th before the library Kindle lending period ends. So, um, good luck with that.
Oh, and my Colts are officially the worst team in the NFL, thanks to our hapless 0-9 record. Since I am a dull-minded fellow, I will keep watching, though I will be using this a lot:
*Not the actual title, I promise

Library of the Living Dead
Well, not all news is good news.
It seems the folks at Library of the Living Dead Press are having some financial difficulties, and several anthologies are being cancelled. I thought two of my short stories ("Sparky Save the World" and "Gus and Mariel") would be published and in anthologies by now. Another short ("Grisham's Council") has been in perpetual flux for almost a year.
In an announcement on the LOTLD boards, the publisher says nearly all anthologies have been cancelled. It's too bad, but the publisher pays most of the costs on his own and we all know the economic climate is terrible.
The implication I get is that the rights to "Gus and Mariel" (a story about a building-size puffin) and "Grisham's Council" (about an anti-hero who unwittingly leads a revolution against an invading alien force) will be released back to me, as their anthologies (Attack of the 50FT Book and Beta City, respectively) are probably kaput. I received an email today saying that the Live and Let Undead anthology is going forward, which means we will see "Sparky Save the World" in print. We're hoping that will be some time before Christmas.
Most of this is speculation on my part...the publisher identified only three anthologies that would move forward (Live and Let Undead being one of the three, while Attack of the 50FT Book and Beta City were not listed). If I hear anything different, I'll let you know.
It's a shame this has to happen, especially since "Gus and Mariel" is one of my favorite stories. Once I get official word that the anthology is cancelled, I'll see what I can do to shop it around.
On the other hand, if this move saves LOTLD from going under, it's definitely the right move.

Attack of the 50FT Cover!
You see this thing on the bookshelf, you think it may just take your arm off!
Wayne Goodchild, editor of the upcoming Attack of the 50FT Book sent this image of the cover to all of the anthology contributors.
Sounds like this one's coming out soon...my shortie "Gus and Mariel" appears.

Gus and Mariel becomes latest pub triumph!
The Peytonometer says "We have a winner!"
I received word today that my short story "Gus and Mariel" has been accepted for Library of the Living Dead Press' Attack of the 50FT Book anthology! The antho, as the title suggests, revolves around giant creatures that attack and destroy cities!
This will be my ninth story accepted for publication...bringing my story batting average (cue the stadium organ!) to .321!
Here's a brief summary of "Gus and Mariel":
Heartbroken after his beloved Mariel is taken away, Gus the Puffin accidentally steps into radioactive goo and grows to epic proportions. Desperate to find his lost love, he heads east, leaving an inadvertent path of destruction in his wake.
I'll provide updates as I learn more about the publication timetable and editing process.
